Title: Rising Mist
Series: TRC
Pairing: None
Rating: PG
Length: about 350 words; poem
Note: AU based on Schubert/Goethe's Erlking
Who rides so late through night and wind?
Is it an image of mist and magic?
Or the trick of an enchanted mirror?
No, only separate halves of a whole
Torn apart at birth and again at death.
A sorrowful tragedy brought by one,
The Erlking, master of temptation,
Leading a worn soul away from body
To gardens of forgotten promises.
“My brother, why do you tremble with fear?”
“Brother, don’t you see the dreaded Erlking?
The Erlking with his crown and smile of ice?”
“My brother, it is a trick of the mist.”
“You lovely young man, come away with me!
I will show you the magic of my arts.
You will see the beauty of my castle
And the glory of the flowers in bloom.”
“My brother, my brother, and don’t you hear
The Erlking whispering promises?”
“Be still; stay calm, my dear brother Yuui;
It’s the wind rustling in the fading leaves.”
“My fine prince, do you want to come with me?
I will care for you as my only heir.
I am ruler of elves and truth-tellers;
Come and I will offer you my kingdom.”
“My brother, my brother, and don’t you see
The Erlking gliding through the shadows?”
“My beloved brother Yuui, I see it clearly;
It’s the silver sheen of the rising mist.”
“I love you; your beautiful eyes delight me!
If you are not willing, I will use force!”
“My brother, the Erlking comes closer!
My brother, the Erlking will strike me!”
Fai shudders; he rides more swiftly forward;
He shelters his trembling brother in his arms.
With effort and urgency he rides on;
In his arms his brother Yuui was silent.
“My fine boy! Depart with me to my home,
Or your image will come with me instead!”
“My brother, my brother, I must go now!
The Erlking has me within his grasp!”
Fai shivers; he presses on faster still;
He holds his brother tightly in his arms.
With effort and urgency he arrives,
But his brother Yuui was already dead.
Who rides so late through night and wind?

A/N - Based on Schubert's Lied, Erlking, which in turn was written based on Goethe's poem. The Erlkonig, or Erlking, is the king of elves, and everyone who touches the Erlking will die. I just studied Schubert's work in my music history class and thought it was rather fitting for Halloween ^^
