Marianne unlocked the door with a small sigh of relief. She quickly twisted the knob and shoved it open with her hip, letting her purse fall to the ground as soon as she was inside.
"Alice?" She called out, not really expecting an answer. Alice tended to keep eccentric hours when she was working on something.
To her surprise, there was a reply. "In the kitchen!"
"Should I be getting out the fire extinguisher?" Marianne joked, kicking off her heels to make her way down the hall. She rounded the corner into their kitchen and looked at her girlfriend with a happy smile.
Alice just scowled at her good-naturedly before flipping closed the manuscript in her hands. "Hard day? You're back early."
"I just walked out on them," Marianne said ruefully. "I couldn't take it anymore."
"Same old thing?"
"Always," she sighed, pulling back a chair to join Alice at the table. "If someone tells me one more time to smile with my eyes, I swear, I'll -"
"Smite them with your eyes instead," Alice suggested helpfully.
Marianne chuckled. "If only it were so simple. How's the novel coming along?"
Alice scoffed in disgust, shooting the stack of papers a dirty look. "The only thing I've managed is to learn that ideas that seem great at three in the morning never transfer satisfactorily into print."
"I think your previous two novels and your fans would disagree," Marianne teased lightly, reaching out to capture one of Alice's hands in her own. She toyed with her fingers, turning them over and tracing the blue smudges on them.
Alice pulled a face and withdrew her hands. "I've been working all day, so let me just wash all the ink off."
Marianne reached out and grabbed Alice's wrist before she could leave the table. "Don't bother. I like seeing them; they're the marks of an artist."
"I'll get it all over you -" she tried to protest, but Marianne only clucked her tongue impatiently.
"Chérie, I don't care about that and you know it. Stop making a fuss and let me admire your pretty hands!"
"You're an idiot," Alice sighed, but she sat back down and let Marianne press kisses on each of her knuckles, a slightly flush on her cheeks.
"But you love me," Marianne teased.
Alice snorted and smirked at her. "That makes me an idiot too, I suppose."
"Ah, then that just makes us two idiots in love," Marianne said. "How utterly romantic!"
Alice rolled her eyes and got up, gently pulling her hands away. "I'm starting dinner. One of us has to be sensible."
"And that will be me," Marianne said hurriedly, moving to block Alice's way to the stove. "You just sit there and dinner will be served."
"I'm not going to get better if I don't practice, you know," Alice retorted, but allowed herself to be steered back to the table.
"Another day, then," Marianne said with a grin.
Alice rolled her eyes again, but returned the smile with a small one of her own. "I'm looking forward to it."
Marianne groaned before moving to get ingredients from the fridge.
