At the sound of light footsteps, Ashura looked up from the book he was studying. A shy blonde head peeked around the corner as Fai checked to see whether or not he would be welcome.
“Come in, Fai,” Ashura smiled and gestured at the young boy. Setting his book aside, he leaned forward and rested his chin on his clasped fingers. “What is it?”
Fai walked forward hesitantly, as if he was already rethinking his decision to bother the king. He stopped in front of Ashura’s large desk and bowed his head.
“Now Fai, that won’t do.” Ashura got up and walked around to where the boy stood. “I told you before, if you’re going to speak to someone, do so with confidence.” He knelt down and caught Fai’s eyes.
“I’m sorry, Your Majesty,” Fai whispered, distraught. “I’ll try harder from now on.”
Ashura frowned. “I don’t want you to be so formal, Fai. I want to be your friend, not only your ruler.”
“Friends help each other, right?” Fai seemed to almost challenge him, daring him to disagree but silently pleading for him not to.
“Of course,” Ashura smiled. “What do you need help with?”
Fai bit his lip and didn’t respond, although a lone tear fell down his cheek. Fai rubbed his eyes on his sleeve, sniffling sadly.
“Was it another nightmare?” Ashura asked gently. When Fai nodded, Ashura strode across the room and sat in an imposing yet comfortable, armchair, motioning for Fai to come. Fai trotted forward and stopped before Ashura, eyes still flooded with tears that were starting to spill loose.
Ashura reached forward and picked the young magician up, settling Fai onto his lap. Fai let out a small gasp and twisted around, blue eyes wide and confused. “Y-your Majesty?” He stuttered.
“Shhh,” the king responded, gently rocking him back and forth.
They spent a long moment like that, before Ashura spoke again. “You’re safe here, okay? Nothing can touch you here, under my protection. I don’t want you to have to worry, Fai.” When there was no response, Ashura continued to talk. “I’ll raise you as I would my own child, with care and with attention.” His chest clenched with a sudden pang. With love.
When there was still no answer, Ashura shifted Fai around a bit, and then chuckled as he realized the boy was asleep. “I suppose I said all of that for nothing.”

That night in the country of Celes, a king that was usually aloof amongst his subjects was smiling from his heart and a boy was sleeping in his arms, free of nightmares for the first time since coming to this land of ice, snow, and curses.
