“It’s been nine years,” Subaru announced suddenly. Kamui’s gaze flickered up to meet his.

“Nine years since what?” He asked, although he had a feeling he already knew. Subaru had been strangely distant all day.

Subaru sat down beside his twin and smiled sadly. “Nine years since we fled from Seishiro-san. We’ve been running from world to world for nine years, and he still hasn’t found us.”

“It’s better this way,” Kamui told him for the umpteenth time. “I won’t let him hurt you again.”

“Yes,” Subaru replied quietly. “I know.” He stood up suddenly.

“Where are you going?” Kamui demanded, afraid of where all this talk was going to lead.

“Don’t worry about me,” was the last thing he heard before Subaru disappeared. Scrambling up in alarm, Kamui followed Subaru only to quickly lose him in the shambles of a ruined city.

“Seishiro-san,” Subaru greeted the Sakurazukamori coldly.

“Subaru-kun.” The assassin nodded to him. “It’s been nine years, hasn’t it?”

Subaru nodded mutely. Seishiro stepped forward, his false right eye gleaming in the dying sun.

“Kamui will be most upset,” the man told Subaru. He only nodded again.

“I made the bet this time,” the vampire reminded Seishiro. “Nine years … nine years to erase all traces from you from my heart. But I have lost the bet, and so I must claim my punishment.” Tears glinted in emerald eyes for a moment. “Truly, I would have it no other way.”

The hunter simply drew back his right hand and smiled. Subaru closed his eyes, then opened them again as he changed his mind. He wanted to see the face of the one that killed him.

A flash and his hand pierced Seishiro’s chest cleanly, sliding out his back. He stared uncomprehendingly at the blood seeping around his wrist, dripping from his fingers, then slowly raised his eyes to look at the hunter’s face.

Seishiro’s face was as peaceful as he had ever seen it. “I’ve always been terribly selfish, Subaru-kun,” the assassin whispered. “And you’ve always been so kind.”

“W-Why?” Subaru managed to choke out.

“Kamui-kun thinks I followed you seeking immortality, as did everyone else,” Seishiro said, slumping forward. “I’ve already explained to you how the Sakurazukamori function: the newest member will kill his, or her, predecessor. However, it was long ago foretold that I would be killed by the one I cared most for, so if I avoided you, I should’ve been immortal; isn’t that so?”

Subaru pulled his hand out of Seishiro’s heart and clutched the dying man to him, sobbing.

“Subaru-kun,” he heard Seishiro whisper dimly. “I really … did …”
